Transition to Primary School
Wee Wisdom Montessori Preschool, Drury is licenced for children to stay until the age of six as the Montessori curriculum works best when children attend all three years (3-6). Legally children entering state school in New Zealand do not have to attend until their sixth birthday, at which stage they are tested and placed in the correct class for their academic level. Children who intend to move onto Montessori Primary will automatically be transitioned at the age of six.
Montessori preschool children who enter state school at the ages of five or six are always successful in their transition. Their academic skills are often advanced in comparison to their primary school classmates but this tends to give them the confidence and ability to enjoy settling into their new environment with ease. The life skills that they learn at Montessori also gives them an advantage as they are able to cope with the demands of the primary school’s requirements for children to be independent and complete work by themselves.
For many families the possibility of their child attending a Montessori Primary depends on logistics such as travel, timing and cost. Wee Wisdom Montessori is fully committed to supporting families in making an informed decision regarding such logistics.
